Cashless Treatment for Road Accident Victims Scheme

Cashless Treatment for Road Accident Victims – Nationwide Health Scheme by the Government of India

The Government of India has rolled out a path-breaking initiative that ensures timely and free medical care for road accident victims. Titled the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, this program aims to drastically reduce fatalities by offering cashless treatment during the critical "golden hour" following a road accident.

Launch Timeline

The scheme was initially piloted in Chandigarh and Assam on 14 March 2024. Due to its success, the initiative was expanded nationwide from 5 May 2025, enabling accident victims from across the country to receive urgent care without financial concerns.

What the Scheme Offers

Under this centrally sponsored program, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) offers the following benefits:

  • Cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh for treatment after a road accident.

  • 7 days of free medical care starting from the day of the accident.

  • Treatment provided in over 30,000 empanelled hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat - PM Jan Arogya Yojana.

  • Coverage includes trauma and polytrauma care packages.

  • Applies to accidents involving any motor vehicle on any Indian road.

Who is Eligible?

The scheme covers:

  • All Indian citizens, regardless of income, caste, or location.

  • Victims of any road accident involving motor vehicles on highways, rural roads, or city streets.

Note: The injured individual must be taken to an Ayushman Bharat-empanelled hospital, and the accident must be reported to the police within 24 hours to qualify for free treatment.

Required Documents at Hospital

Victims or accompanying persons need to present:

  • Aadhaar Card of the victim (if available), or

  • Any valid photo ID proof to establish identity.

No additional forms or applications are needed—the process is hospital-managed and streamlined.

Where to Get Treatment

Treatment can only be availed at hospitals that are:

  • Empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).

  • Willing to provide care without demanding any payment from the patient.

  • Authorised to claim reimbursement later from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund through a government-set process.

How the Reimbursement Works

  • Hospitals submit documentation to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways via the empanelment portal.

  • The government reimburses the cost from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.

  • Victims or their families are not liable to bear any costs.

No Application Process Required

Unlike other welfare schemes, beneficiaries do not need to register or apply in advance. Any person injured in a road accident becomes automatically eligible by fulfilling the basic conditions:

  • Admitted to a qualified, empanelled hospital.

  • Police should be informed about the accident within the specified 24-hour timeframe.

All backend processing, documentation, and reimbursement are handled by hospital staff and government agencies.
