Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme
Relief for Road Accident Victims: Hit and Run Compensation Scheme in India
India witnesses thousands of road accidents every year, and many of these are tragic hit-and-run cases where the responsible vehicle is never identified. To provide financial support in such situations, the Government of India launched a dedicated initiative called the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme.
Launch Timeline
- Scheme Launch Date: April 1, 2022
- Managing Body: General Insurance Council
- Governing Department: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
Why This Scheme Matters
In previous years, victims or their families had no legal recourse when the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident remained unidentified. This scheme bridges that gap by offering fixed financial compensation.
Benefits of the Scheme
- ₹2,00,000 compensation in case of death of the victim
- ₹50,000 compensation for grievous injuries
- Timely processing through district-level committees
Note: The scheme only applies when the offending vehicle is untraceable. If the vehicle is identified, the victim’s family must file a claim under the Motor Vehicles Act instead.
Eligibility Criteria
- Victim must be an Indian citizen
- The accident must involve an untraceable motor vehicle
- The victim must have either suffered grievous injuries or died
Required Documents
- Completed Application Form
- Claimant and victim's Aadhaar card
- FIR copy
- Bank account details (with IFSC code)
- Death certificate (if applicable)
- Hospital/injury report
- Mobile number and other supporting documents
How to Apply
- Visit the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) or Tehsildar’s office
- Collect the free application form
- Attach all necessary documents
- Submit the form to the same office
The enquiry officer (SDM/Tehsildar) will process the claim and forward it to the District Magistrate for final approval. Once verified, the General Insurance Council will release the compensation directly into the bank account within 15 days.
District-Level Committee for Oversight
Each district has a special committee to ensure fair and fast claim settlements. The committee includes:
- Claims Settlement Officer (Chairperson)
- Claims Enquiry Officer
- Police (SP/DSP), CMO, RTO Officer
- A nominated public member
- General Insurance Council officer (Member Secretary)
Related Initiative: Cashless Treatment Scheme
Alongside the compensation scheme, the Government launched the Cashless Treatment for Road Accident Victims Scheme in May 2025. Under this scheme, injured victims are eligible for up to ₹1.5 lakh in treatment expenses for up to 7 days. Visit the official information portal for more details.
