Introduction
The Government of Assam is running a special program called the Punya Dham Scheme, which helps elderly residents visit some of India’s most sacred religious places without spending any money. The entire journey, including travel, food, and accommodation, is fully funded by the Assam Government.

Key Purpose of the Scheme
Many older individuals dream of visiting religious places during their lifetime, but due to financial limitations, their dreams often remain unfulfilled. To support such individuals, the Assam Tourism Department launched this scheme in 2017. Its goal is to provide a comfortable, safe, and cost-free pilgrimage experience to eligible senior citizens.
Religious Places Covered
Under this scheme, eligible applicants can choose to visit one of the following religious destinations:

Ajmer Sharif Dargah

Mathura–Vrindavan
All trips will begin from Guwahati, and the journey is organized in groups. Beneficiaries must reach Guwahati on their own.
What Benefits Are Provided?
Eligible individuals selected under the Punya Dham Yatra will receive the following facilities:

Free travel arrangements by 3rd AC train or government-arranged buses

Free accommodation throughout the tour duration

Daily food allowance of Rs. 150 per person

Full support during the travel, including group coordination
No costs are to be borne by the selected beneficiaries for these services once the journey begins from Guwahati.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must satisfy the following conditions to be eligible:

Must be a permanent resident of Assam
-
Male applicants should be aged between 60 and 75 years
-
Female applicants should be aged between 55 and 70 years
-
Annual family income should not exceed Rs. 2.5 lakh
-
Only two members from a single family can apply
-
Both applicants should be medically and physically fit to travel

How to Apply for the Scheme?
There are two ways to apply for the Punya Dham Yatra:

Offline Mode – Interested individuals can collect the application form from the district office of the Tourism Department or Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited. The filled form along with all the required documents should be submitted at the same office.

Online Mode – During specific time periods, online application forms are made available on the official website of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation. Applicants can submit their forms digitally when the portal is open.
After submission, the authorities verify all applications and prepare a final list of selected candidates. An SMS is sent to the registered mobile number of the selected beneficiaries.

The tour will be conducted in groups of 50 to 100 people.

Government bears all major expenses during the journey.

Beneficiaries must arrive at the departure point (Guwahati) on their own.
Additional Scheme: Punya Tirtha Yojana
Apart from the above-mentioned religious destinations, the Assam Government also runs the Punya Tirtha Yojana, which arranges a free-of-cost pilgrimage to the Shri Ram Mandir at Ayodhya. This scheme is also aimed at senior citizens and follows a similar process for application and selection.
