PM Matru Vandana Scheme: ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 Support for Pregnant Women | Complete Guide

The Government of India has initiated the PM Matru Vandana Scheme to ensure better maternal health and financial protection for pregnant women. Launched on 1st January 2017, this centrally sponsored program offers monetary support of ₹5,000 for first-time mothers and ₹6,000 for second-time mothers who give birth to a girl child.

What is PM Matru Vandana Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity benefit program run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, targeting financially and socially disadvantaged pregnant and lactating mothers. The scheme aims to:

  • Ensure better nutrition during pregnancy.

  • Provide partial wage compensation for working women.

  • Encourage the birth of a girl child through added financial benefits.

Previously known as the Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana, it was revamped and reintroduced in 2017 under the current name.

Financial Assistance Offered Under PMMVY

For First Pregnancy:

  • Total Benefit: ₹5,000 (One-time assistance)

    • 1st Installment: ₹3,000 – On pregnancy registration and at least one ANC (within 6 months of LMP).

    • 2nd Installment: ₹2,000 – After delivery of the baby and post-birth immunizations.

For Second Pregnancy:

  • ₹6,000 is granted only if a girl child is born.

  • The condition is that the newborn must receive BCG, OPV, DPT, and Hepatitis B vaccinations.

Who Can Avail This Scheme? | PMMVY Eligibility Criteria

Women must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Must be a pregnant or lactating mother.

  • For ₹5,000 benefit: First pregnancy only.

  • For ₹6,000 benefit: Second pregnancy with girl child.

  • Must have an Aadhaar card linked to a bank account.

  • Application must be submitted within 730 days from the LMP (Last Menstrual Period).

  • Should belong to socially and economically backward classes.

Which Categories Are Treated as Disadvantaged?

The scheme is designed for women from low-income and vulnerable backgrounds, including:

  • SC/ST women

  • BPL (Below Poverty Line) ration card holders

  • E-Shram card holders

  • Ayushman Bharat – PMJAY beneficiaries

  • Women receiving PM-Kisan benefits

  • 40% or more disabled women

  • MGNREGA job card holders

  • Pregnant/lactating ASHA, AWW, or AWH workers

  • Families with an annual income under ₹8 lakh

Required Documents for PMMVY Registration

At the time of registration at the Anganwadi Center, pregnant women must present:

  • Aadhaar Card (Mandatory)

  • Ayushman Card / E-Shram Card (Any one)

  • Aadhaar-linked mobile number

  • Bank account details

  • Photograph for registration

How to Register for PM Matru Vandana Scheme?

Currently, registration is facilitated only through Anganwadi Centres. Here's how to apply:

  1. Visit your local Anganwadi Centre after completing your first ANC checkup.

  2. Submit necessary documents to the Anganwadi Worker (AWW).

  3. The AWW will upload your details on the official PMMVY portal/app.

  4. Aadhaar-based OTP verification will be done.

  5. Live photo and signature will be captured.

  6. Upon successful registration, a Beneficiary ID will be sent via SMS.

After approval:

  • ₹3,000 (1st installment) is transferred before birth.

  • ₹2,000 (2nd installment) is transferred after the baby's birth and required immunizations.

Note: Self-registration through the PMMVY website is no longer available. Only Anganwadi workers can register beneficiaries now.
